Haruka Yamamoto

Abstract

Download

This paper examines the ongoing territorial dispute between South Korea and Japan over the Dokdo/Takeshima Islands, exploring its historical context, legal arguments, and diplomatic ramifications. The contested islands, known as Dokdo in Korea and Takeshima in Japan, have been a source of tension between the two nations for decades, with both claiming sovereignty based on historical records and international law. The study begins by tracing the origins of the dispute to the early 20th century, analyzing key historical events and documents that have shaped each country's claim. It then scrutinizes the legal arguments presented by both sides, including interpretations of the San Francisco Peace Treaty and the application of the principle of effective control. The research highlights how the dispute has affected bilateral relations between South Korea and Japan, impacting trade, cultural exchanges, and security cooperation in Northeast Asia. It also explores the broader geopolitical implications, considering the strategic importance of the islands and surrounding waters in terms of natural resources and maritime boundaries. Furthermore, the paper examines the role of nationalism and domestic politics in both countries, analyzing how the dispute has been leveraged by political actors and its influence on public opinion. The study also evaluates past attempts at resolution and the challenges faced in finding a mutually acceptable solution. By employing a multidisciplinary approach incorporating historical analysis, international law, and diplomatic studies, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding the Dokdo/Takeshima dispute. The paper concludes by proposing potential pathways for de-escalation and resolution, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic dialogue and the need for creative solutions that address the interests of both nations while promoting regional stability.

Abstract

This article examines two significant shifts in Turkish political history following World War II. Firstly, it explores Turkey's pro-American pivot in foreign policy, which intensified after the Democrat Party's election in 1950. The party implemented progressive liberal policies, including democratic reforms, market economy orientation, agricultural transformation, and increased religious freedoms. These changes, coupled with strengthened pro-Americanism, transformed Turkey's image from an authoritarian state to a pro-American democracy, improving its relations with Western powers. The Korean War accelerated this process. Secondly, the article analyzes the consequent rise of anti-communism in Turkey. When the Democrat Party decided to intervene in the Korean War, it faced opposition from the Turkish Peace-lovers Association. The government responded by criminalizing the association's activities and supporting anti-communist organizations. This led to a "purifying campaign" similar to those in other Korean War participating countries, institutionalizing anti-communism as a state ideology. The article argues that during the Korean War period, pro-American progressivism combined with anti-communism became the dominant ideological force in Turkey, shaping its domestic and foreign policies.

This article examines the evolving nature of trilateral defense cooperation among the United States, Japan, and South Korea, analyzing its impact on regional stability in Northeast Asia. The study explores the historical context, current challenges, and future prospects of this strategic partnership, focusing on how it addresses shared security concerns and contributes to maintaining peace in the region. The research begins by tracing the development of bilateral and trilateral security arrangements since the Cold War era, highlighting key milestones and agreements. It then assesses the contemporary security landscape, including North Korea's nuclear program, China's rising influence, and other regional threats that have spurred closer cooperation among the three nations. The paper analyzes recent joint military exercises, intelligence sharing initiatives, and policy coordination efforts, evaluating their effectiveness in enhancing interoperability and deterrence capabilities. It also examines the obstacles to deeper cooperation, including historical tensions between Japan and South Korea, domestic political considerations, and differing strategic priorities. Furthermore, the study explores the broader implications of this trilateral partnership for regional dynamics, including its impact on relations with China and Russia, as well as its role in supporting the U.S.-led security architecture in the Asia-Pacific. The ends with offering policy recommendations for strengthening trilateral defense cooperation while addressing potential areas of friction. It emphasizes the importance of sustained diplomatic efforts, enhanced military-to-military ties, and a shared strategic vision in fostering long-term regional stability and security.
